The index that the Dunedin Family History Group is selling is unique because it identifies the child’s name from the birth index. In the period 1868 to 1908 the birth notice only records “son” or “daughter”. We have searched the Registrar General’s index and identified the full name of the child. When we could not find a birth registered we have checked the burial records, cemetery headstone transcripts and school records. There is only 15 children out of about 1100 births that we have not found a name for.
The death index includes not only the death notice but the funeral notice, the obituary notice, the memorial notice and the acknowledgement notice. All of these provide additional clues. Our index also highlights conflicting information such as alternate spelling and dates between the death and funeral notices.
